The L-1, the first model in the L series, featuring a high-performance 4x zoom lens using ED lenses, was released in 1990 (Heisei 2). The L-shaped body is realized with a unique layout that stores the rolled-up film inside the back cover box. In addition, a grip was placed in a perfectly balanced position to eliminate camera shake and achieve stable holding. The film winding mechanism to achieve the L-shaped body faced many problems, such as ensuring loading reliability and reducing film winding stress, and it is said to have been completed as a result of the great efforts of the engineers.
